CHF Scholarship Award Recipients Announced
Each year the Czech Heritage Foundation awards scholarships to deserving students from the Cedar
Rapids area. This year, three applicants were chosen to receive $750 scholarships. Recipients were:
Laura Kristine Sauer - University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA
Leah Podzimek - Wartburg in Waverly, IA
Andrew S. Frerick - Grinnell in Grinnell, IA.
CHF Picnic and Meeting - Aug 09
The Czech Heritage Foundation will be hosting their annual Members' Picnic and Meeting in the
Parkview Pavilion and Jones Park in Cedar Rapids. The event runs from 5:00pm - 10:00pm. Tableware,
drinks, and meat dishes are provided. Members are asked to bring a dish to share!
Miss Czech-Slovak IA Wins National Heritage Involvement Award
Miss Czech-Slovak IA, Samantha Hubler, competed at the National Miss Czech-Slovak US Pageant in Wilber, NE
August 5-7. Samantha brought home the Heritage Involvement Award, given to the contestant with the
most and best community involvement in their heritage.
Houby Days - May 13-15
Come celebrate the arrival of Spring with the Czech community at the annual Houby Days festival in
Cedar Rapids! This special year hosts the 10th anniversary of the Miss-Czech Slovak IA pageant and
the movement of the NCSML building. In addition, there will be music, food, dancing, a beer garden,
traditional dress and activities, and a number of vendors. For the complete Houby Days schedule,

University of Iowa Cultural Diversity Festival - April 03
The CHF was in Iowa City on April 3 to celebrate diversity and represent the Czech community at the
University of Iowa's Cultural Diversity Festival, held annually at the Field House. This event is
the second largest student-run event at the University and was a great opportunity to not only teach
others about our Czech heritage, but to learn about other cultures!
St. Joseph's Day Dance - March 20
Put on your dancing shoes because Barefoot Becky is back for the annual CHF Saint Joseph's Day Dance!
We look forward to seeing you on March 20 at Elks Lodge in Cedar Rapids for an afternoon of
music, dancing, friends, and fun! Admission is $7.00 and the CHF will be hosting a bake sale
and raffle with all proceeds supporting our Homestay and Scholarship programs. We hope to see you
there!
